Environmental Management Systems (EMS) for Small Businesses

Many States offer incentives to companies who implement an EMS. Hawaii is still lagging a bit in that regard, but with programs like the State of Hawaii "Green Business Program" supported by the Hawaii Department of Health, the Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, and the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, it looks as if Hawaii will be catching up soon. EMS is supported by just about every government agency from the EPA to local governments. If you do business with some government agencies, chances are you will be required to have an EMS. Some of the large corporations demand that their suppliers have an EMS.

Even if you never thought about implementing an EMS, we feel it might be worth your while to at least check it out. More and more companies are "going green". Why? Because consumers, stores, suppliers, government, and markets are demanding it. Being environmentally responsible is not a niche anymore, it is mainline. And if "going green" can also add to your bottom-line (profit), it makes business sense as well.

Why do so few small and medium sized businesses have an EMS?
- Misconceptions that environmental issues are under control
- Belief that EMS is not relevant or important to the business
- Concerns about cost and time
- Misconceptions that EMS is complicated and unattainable
- Fear of discovering non-compliance issues or other internal problems

Benefits of Effective EMS Program:
- Improved environmental performance, e.g. reduced emissions and natural resources
- Cost savings through reduced chemical, raw material & utility use, lower disposal fees
- Improved employee morale and participation
- Increased awareness and better management
- New green and niche marketing opportunities
- Reduced liability
- Improved customer and public relations

How can CFM Environmental LLC (CFM) be helpful in your implementation of an EMS?

For the past two years, CFM has been studying Environmental Management Systems, and specifically how these systems can be adapted to small and medium sized businesses. There is a huge difference between an international corporation and an owner-run small business, but a properly integrated EMS will save even the smallest business money in the long run while offering many advantages. And, depending on the company, many EMS aspects may already be present. When CFM developed an EMS specifically aimed at small business, there were three (3) prime criteria to be met:

                1. Implementation of an EMS must be low-cost (shoestring).
                2. The EMS cannot be time consuming.
                3. The EMS must cover all the requirements of a normal EMS.

With our system, the above three criteria HAVE BEEN MET, and we are proud to offer the CFM small business EMS system to any interested party.
